One of the most important works on witchcraft and demonology, written by H. Kramer and J. Sprenger in 1487, in which the authors combined old folk beliefs related to black magic with the church dogma of heresy. Until now, the Polish translation from 1614 by S. Ząbkowic was available, only of selected fragments, and it is more of a study than a reliable translation.
The first part discusses the need for the rulers to understand the essence of witchcraft crimes. The second part discusses the principles that a sorcerer must follow when casting spells and using magic. It also talks about medicines that prevent enchantment, about those that remove the spell cast and heal those affected by witchcraft. It also describes the method of joining the group of sorcerers and the sacrilegious vow, methods of action and descriptions of horrific practices and obstacles against witchcraft. The third part of "The Hammer of Witches" concerns the methods of slaying, or as the author himself admits not without pain "at least punishing by appropriate justice" of wicked witches. It therefore describes the entire procedure of evidentiary proceedings from the capture of a witch to the verdict - whether guilty or not. What interests the author are side issues in the subject of torture - for example, how to recognize such real, pain-insensitive witches, carefully considering, for example, whether they are able to shed tears.
The translation was undertaken by Jakub Zielonka, a historian who meticulously translated the original and discussed the topic in detail, supplementing the text with studies, illustrations and over 1,000 footnotes for each volume.
