Reprint of a book from 1595.
This extensive work consists of two books and covers almost 500 pages. The most extensive is the first book: On the Nature of Various Herbs, Book One, by Doctor Marcin Urzędów. The second book has a long title: On the Properties of Natural Trees, And Some Herbs from the Sea. At the same time about the Cliiach from Various Trees: also about Crusts, and other things, to Medicines Belonging, Book Two, by Doctor Marcin Urzędów. On page 395 is the beginning of the second part of the second book, titled: Part Two of the Second Books: On Crusts.
In both chapters, the author discusses medicinal herbaceous and woody plants, arranged in alphabetical order. He provided a short description of the plant, mainly based on vegetative morphological features, very often also on its flowering period, place of occurrence and medicinal effect. This was often accompanied by an engraving. The first book is particularly richly illustrated with quite good engravings, usually reflecting the natural appearance of plants.
Finally, the author included an erratum, an alphabetical list of Latin names of plants and a Register of Polish Herbs of all those described in this Herbarz. The work ends with a list of diseases and plant medicines used against them Easy to find medicines, for various diseases, described in this Herbarz.
Marcin of Urzędów wanted to contribute to improving the level of natural knowledge in Poland by publishing his work, and especially to correct the errors that could be found in the books of his predecessors. He also wanted to popularize domestic medicinal plants. Marcin describes the healing effects of herbs and methods of preparing plant medicines not only on the basis of data taken from other, especially ancient authors, but also on the basis of his own observations.
