"The Statute of Kaliski" - Portfolio in bookbinding version with book - Artur SzykTHE BOOK IS IN ENGLISH AND HEBREWThe reprint is based on one of the few original copies preserved in a complete set in Poland. This edition, marked with the number 176, was a gift from the artist to the first prime minister of Reborn Poland, Ignacy Jan Paderewski. It was given with a handwritten dedication to the great pianist in Paris in 1934. Dedicated to Józef Piłsudski.
The Statute was created in the years 1926-1928 and, alongside the later "Haggadah", occupies a special place in the artist's rich oeuvre, as well as in the history of Polish culture. At the same time, presented as an act of historical tolerance, it has become a permanent element of Polish-Jewish relations.
The portfolio is accompanied by a book - a guide to symbols squeezed between the texts on the pages of the Statute - "Historia Statutu Kaliskiego..." developed by Marian Fuks, Aleksander B. Skotnicki, Joanna Podolska and Marek Szukalak. This compendium of knowledge turns out to be extremely necessary for the analysis of individual pages of the Statute presented in the further part of the publication, thanks to which the rich mosaic of symbols is no longer a mystery to the reader.
